A Taste of K - 2 Curriculum

K - 2

In the first years of elementary school, it is essential to inspire young minds and build foundational skills.  Our teachers motivate children through engaging lessons and provide individual support to ensure that children understand concepts and feel confident.

The morning is dedicated to subjects that require more focused attention: reading, phonics, grammar, spelling, writing, and mathematics.  Along with science and social studies, the afternoon is spent exploring art, music, Spanish, and physical education, each taught by a specialized teacher.

Language Arts

Progressing from phonics instruction through leveled readers and literature, each child experiences success.  Building vocabulary and comprehension skills along with spelling and grammar round out language arts instruction.  Proper letter formation is taught as students go from writing simple, but original, stories in kindergarten to multi-paragraph narratives in second grade.  Second graders learn cursive and use it daily.

Mathematics

While students practice and master basic mathematical operations, learning to enjoy unraveling the mysteries of mathematics is the primary goal.  Understanding there are many ways to solve math problems gives students the confidence to share ideas and solutions.  Students are encouraged to explain, revise, and evaluate their thought processes.  While there is a place for memorization of math facts, practical application is the focus.

Science and Social Studies

Their passion for science is nurtured through hands-on activities and lab investigations.  Our goal is to develop curiosity for all things science by exploring and discovering.

In social studies, students gain a wider-world perspective and discover the uniqueness of who they are. Studying the geography of the world allows them to explore new places and cultures.

Social-Emotional Learning

Teachers emphasize the importance of social-emotional development as children learn how to navigate the world around them, express their feelings, problem-solve, and overcome obstacles. Even the shyest children begin to blossom as they are encouraged to share their ideas and speak in front of others. Excellent character is modeled and children are expected to demonstrate kindness and manners.
